Concussion has become one of the most prevalent and concerning sport injuries of our time. In fact, several sources estimate that there are up to 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions in the United States each year.[1] It’s quite clear that concussions remain a significant public health concern, particularly in sport.

While there are lot of unknowns about concussions, there is actually a lot we do know about these injuries and concussion management. One of the problem is that media headlines, in some cases, do not accurately reflect or report the scientific evidence and medical research. The good news is that the research in this area is rapidly evolving and growing every day.

Dr. Cameron Marshall, DC (concussion_doc) joins the HealthSimple Show to discuss the truth about concussions. During the show, we ask the question: Do we have a concussion problem? Or, do we have a problem with the way we manage these injuries?

There is a lot we can do to help patients suffering from concussion and post-concussion syndrome (or PCS). Following a thorough assessment from a trained practitioner, this may include exercise therapy, cervicogenic rehabilitation, manual therapy, and visual and vestibular therapy, for example. Further, there is a lot we can do to limit the risk for injury among athletes, including concussion protocols, training and management for sports and schools. Most importantly, it’s all about taking the right steps and seeing the right healthcare practitioners at the right time.
